Recognition Breakfast

This morning was the recognition breakfast for area Lutheran church "Volunteer Of The Year" honorees. This is a picture my friend, Linda took for me. There is going to be a more professional picture available, but I don't know when.
Since this was the "first annual", I reallyl didn't know what to expect. 32 invitations went out to area Lutheran churches, requesting nominees. Of those 32, 27 churches sent nominations. Of those, 21 were present at the breakfast.
After introductions and breakfast, the Lt. Gov. Sheehy (sp?) gave the keynote speech. In his speech, he said Nebraska was ranked #2 for volunteerism in the nation. I thought that was a cool stat!
Each of the volunteers' bio was read and a placque was given to them. There was a placque to be displayed at the church, and a framed certificate for the individual. When I heard some of the bios, I realized how big of an honor this really was. There were 3 ladies who were "90 years young," who had been volunteering for decades, not just years. There was an older couple who was not only recognized by their church, but also by Tabitha (a rehabilitation hospital here in Lincoln), for their service to "Meals On Wheels". This couple delivered over 200,000 meals to shut-ins. AMAZING numbers! Another gentleman was honored for organizing the Lincoln chapter of the "Orphan Train." Although I put a lot of hours and energy into the Youth Group, I certainly have a lot of admiration for the other honorees. I definitely felt humble, listening to what the others have done, and still do.
I had to laugh at the group picture. I got to stand in the back row!! With all of the little old ladies, I was actually tall enough for the back row!

With the number of people in your church, this is a great honor. You should be very proud of this recognition.

Congratulations! It's nice to be recognized for your efforts, but I know the real reward comes from seeing the young people you've mentored grow into faithful adults.
